The town of Tazovsky is a district center of the Tazovsky District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. As of January 1, 2014, the population of the village is 7 339 people.

The first mention of the territory that today is part of the Tazovsky district belongs to the 16th century, when the trade route to Mangazey passed along the Taz River. The stories and legends were told about the Zlatokipyashchey Mangasee. The region was rich in fish, furs, sturgeon, venison, sables and hazel grouses. All this skillfully mined Nenets – indigenous inhabitants of the North, engaged in traditional crafts: hunting, reindeer breeding and fishing.
