We are at the 78th latitude! On the northernmost point of Eurasia continent – Cape Chelyuskin!
The waters of the two seas, Kara and Laptev, are mixed at its banks. Further, in the north – the Arctic Ocean, in the south – lifeless lands. The climate at Cape Chelyuskin is severe. Winter lasts 10-11 months, in July and August – the warmest months of summer – the temperature rarely rises above 1 ° C. The average temperature for a year is -14 ° C. During the year almost 300 mm of atmospheric precipitation falls; snow can lie all year round, without melting. In different years various expeditions were undertaken to Cape Chelyuskin, organized by researchers from Norway, Sweden, and Russia. In 1932, there was built a polar station, the next year expanded to an observatory. Now on the headland there is a polar station – a radiometeorological center, in which 8-10 people hibernate each year. Some of the previously constructed buildings are abandoned, as well as an airfield, from which only the helipad remained.
