Snowmobile Arctic Expedition

15 day of expedition

0

By morning, as promised weather forecasters, the wind dropped to 6 m / s. All night long there was a snowstorm. We dig snowmobiles out of drifts. As soon as the sun rises higher we go on the route. Visibility is still limited, active precipitation. Today there is only one plan – to pass 150 km to the Sterligov weather station.

Blizzard again

In the morning we managed to drive about 150 km. The weather conditions deteriorated, a snowstorm began, the wind was 15 m / s. Before the weather station Sterligov it is necessary to pass the same length of the way. Among the endless chain of cases of imprudence and relaxation, the trivial truth passes through a red thread – the Arctic does not forgive mistakes. Because of the limited visibility, we stop moving and set up a tent. We’ll wait for better weather. We often think about what it was like for those who walked up to us, about a hundred years ago, when there were not even maps … All the travelers of the North are extraordinary people, heroes, and any Arctic journey is a feat. When you yourself experienced the difficulties of crossing the North, then it’s scary to read about past expeditions. Papanin, Vilkitsky, Dezhnev, Chelyuskin – anyone, they all performed feats. Or the expedition of the era of Peter I – these people for 10 years came from Arkhangelsk, incredibly hard to break the road to the East!

Heroes of the Old Time

March 30 we leave on the return route. Temperature -28C, wind south 3 m / s. Confident movement is hampered by numerous faults in the ice. We pass Tolya Bay in the Kara Sea, on the north-western coast of the Taimyr Peninsula. The length is 24 km, the width of the entrance is about 60 km. In the bay area in 1914 the vessels of the Russian hydrographic expedition “Taimyr” and “Vaigach” wintered. Opened in 1741-42 by the detachment of H. Laptev, later named in honor of the famous explorer of the north, Baron E. V. Toll

My dear friends!

I, Alexander Peterman, thank each of you for your kind words. Every three hours I received messages with congratulations on the satellite communication. Today, your support and attention to the course of the expedition is important for me and the team as a whole. A decision must be made. As you know from our reports, we encountered an obstacle to the archipelago of the Northern Earth – drifting ice in the Vilkitsky Strait.

We stand on the shore of the Vilkitsky Strait, separating the Cape Chelyuskin from the Northern Land archipelago. The length of the strait is 130 km, and the width at the narrowest point between Cape Chelyuskin and Cape Taimyr on Bolshevik is 56 km.

The extreme point of Eurasia is Chelyuskin

Morning Guests

In the morning an unexpected find: in 100 meters from the tent fresh traces of a bear and a bear cub. Near the “guests” can not find. The weather is clear, -28С, the south wind is 4 m / s. We leave in the direction of Cape Chelyuskin.

Yesterday we left Sterlingov. Once again, we want to thank the staff of the weather station for a warm welcome. Girls are wonderful housewives, who created a homely place here, at the “edge of the world”, on a tiny weather station.

Weather station on Cape Sterligov

By 15.00 on Friday we arrive at the marine hydrometeorological polar station Sterlegov. We are met by the head of the station Vladimir Nikolayevich Karabulin and his colleagues. In total, the station has 4 people, and 5 km from them – a radio navigation station, there are 2 more people. It’s all! For hundreds of kilometers, not a soul!
